10 very intresting apps for your installation of Ubuntu Feisty
After a complete (re)installation of Ubuntu Feisty Fawn (7.04), I started to find out some new applications to try.
Those apps are now showed on this page and ready for the installation.
I’ve included all the possible commands to install packages for the people that (like me) loves to do just a “select + middle-click” instead of using slow GUIs to do operations 
Do you trust my choices? Then install everything.
With this simple command, you’ll download and install every application listed on this page from official ubuntu’s repository (packages included in the Tips sections will be not installed!) instead of read all the post ;).
sudo apt-get install soundconverter brasero jokosher sbackup thoggen pitivi disk-manager tracker gnome-compiz-manager
Here is a complete list of 10 desktop intended apps that probably you (will) need:
Soundconverter
Soundconverter is a small application that allow you to convert audio files in many audio types.
You can select a lot of options or convert entire folders in just few clicks.

Installation on Ubuntu it’s very simple:
open Synaptic (System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager) and install the package “soundconverter” or simply use this command in the Terminal:
sudo apt-get install soundconverter
Soundconverter: tips
In order to get soundconverter to convert audio files to mp3 you have to install the package “gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-multiverse”
sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-multiverse
Brasero
Probably one of the best CD/DVD burning application for GNOME.
Full integration with Totem and Beagle.

open Synaptic (System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager) and install the package “brasero” or simply use this command in the Terminal:
sudo apt-get install brasero
Brasero: tips
Installing Beagle (desktop search system) brasero will be allowed to integrate searches directly in its GUI.
sudo apt-get install beagle
Jokosher
This is a Garageband-like application with a good list of features (it’s still too yung for some uses) but with some problems caused principally by the non-existent JACK usage (so there are many alerts).
If developers will solve this, Jokosher will have a lot of chances to became one of the most installed application of the Ubuntu desktop users.

Sbackup
Absolutely the best solution for Desktop/Power users to backup their data.
Sbackup, a software born during one of the last Google Summer Of Code, allow the user to set all the preferences for a complete or incremental backup.
Here is a quite-complete features list:
- Backup any subset of files and directories
- Exclude files and directories by regex expressions
- Exclude files by type (extension)
- Exclude files by maximum file size
- Backup to local filesystem
- Backup to any Gnome-VFS supported remote filesystem (including sftp and ftp)
- Full and incremental backups
- Scheduling backups via cron
- Gnome GUI for configuration
- Gnome GUI for restore
- Command-line restore tool that also provides a Python API for restoring a file or directory
- Backing up package list in Debian derived distributions
- On restore, existing files are not overwritten, but are renamed to a safe name

Thoggen
This application let you rip DVD into OGG video files.
I think that it’s one of the best software because of its clear and functional interface, understandable from new users too. And, off course, it spreads open formats

PiTiVi
Ok, ok, this video editing app is still under hard developement but.. I like it!
If someone will help the main developer, probably this will be able to became one of the most requested software by desktop users.
It has a well designed interface, and some intresting ideas. Maybe it doesn’t work properly now but, it doesn’t work in a good way :p
I’m waiting for some appreciable features by the author. I would love to create some beautiful videos in a simple way (cinelerra was toooooooooooo complex for every user I met)

sudo apt-get install pitivi
Disk-Manager
This software automatically detect new Hard drives and/or partitions and allow you to configure their usage in the best way.
It writes changes to /etc/fstab and preserve a sort of “cache” or “history” for every configuration you tried.
It uses Devices IDs instead of UNIX like method (ie. /dev/hda1, /dev/hdc3 etc..).

Tracker
Probably the best solution to index and search your data.
It has a database that can be used trough some APIs to integrate a full and well organized application.
For example. Do you need images? Or music? just one click 
Authors are currently trying to spread this software inside the GNOME community because it’s faster than beagle (written in MONO) and has a lot of fantastic features (just imagine rhytmbox or f-spot that doesn’t need to watch any directory, leaving all the work to only one app: Tracker).

open Synaptic (System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager) and install the package “tracker” or simply use this command in the Terminal:
sudo apt-get install tracker
Tracker: tips
You can integrate tracker with the Deskbar Applet of the GNOME Panels. Just do:
sudo apt-get install libdeskbar-tracker
Affinity
Affinity is one of the much sexy interfaces to programs like tracker and beagle.
It could be integrated in the panels like an applet or launched as a normal program in the notification area.
Currently in a high level of developement, I’m waiting for its future release (0.2) that probably will be one of the best interfaces you’ve ever seen on your Linux installation.

The installation is a bit different from the other softwares listed on this page.
Launch this command trough a terminal window:
gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
and then add those lines at the end:

save the file and use the following commands:

then open Synaptic (System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager) and install the package “affinity” or simply use this command in the Terminal:

If you want to try the SVN version (developers version). Just do this instead of the previous command:
sudo apt-get install affinity-svn
Gnome-compiz-manager
There are almost two ways to configure compiz (desktop effects) on Feisty by default: using the simple interface of the Desktop Effects applet situated in the menu System -> Preferences -> Desktop Effects, or trough the bad (but full of power and highly configurable) interface of gconf (launch gconf-editor with the keyboard shortcut Alt+F2).
Another way is to install this beautiful software that will allow you to configure more option of your compiz installation (including hot-corners, keyboard shortcuts and many more things).

I must suck for asking this but, what do you mean with non-existant JACK usage in Joksher? That’s an application I’m definitely interested in.

Without JACK integration jokosher can’t use the high speed of the low-latency kernel and so, it’s too slow to use
Moreover it crashes a lot of times because the requested version of gstreamer (Gnonlin) it’s still in CVS.
Maybe with the next version, this beautiful app will function better than now..

Great list, very helpful.
A few new suggestions there for me. I’m currently missing AutoGK (running it through a virtual machine but it’s slower) but like the simplistic look of Thoggen. Shame it doesn’t have queue functionality.
I’ll give Tracker a try too instead of Beagle.
